Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?
Pelvic floor PT is a non-surgical and non-pharmacologic treatment approach to improve the function of your pelvic floor through strengthening, coordination, and relaxation. The muscles of the pelvic floor allow for bladder and bowel continence, assist in sexual health and functioning, and assist in core stability.
How do I know if I need pelvic floor PT?
The rule of thumb is that if something is bothersome, we want to address it. If symptoms like urinary leakage, frequency, pelvic pain, constipation, or pain with sex are limiting your daily life and are causing distress, you do not have to continue suffering. Schedule a free consultation to see if pelvic floor PT can be beneficial for your symptoms.
What will each session be like?
Our goal is to create an empathetic, welcoming environment during each session. While the goal of the initial evaluation is to discuss your symptoms, your goals, and current function, each following session will re-evaluate to ensure the interventions we are using are working. Your treatment sessions will focus on personalized techniques and exercises to improve strength and facilitate healing.
How soon will I see results?
While every patient is different, most patients see significant improvement in their symptoms within 8-10 visits.
Are treatments hands-on?
Your treatment will be a blend of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and education as needed based on your current function and your goals.
What do I need for my appointment?
All you need for your appointment is a little bit of space for a table for in-home, or a yoga mat/comfortable spot to move around in for telehealth.
How often should I schedule sessions?
Every patient is different and has different goals that they are looking to achieve. Typically, patients will attend pelvic floor PT weekly or bi-weekly. Your initial evaluation with your therapist will determine the frequency.
Is it safe for me to have pelvic floor PT while pregnant?
Absolutely. Exercise during pregnancy has been shown to have minimal adverse events and can help improve your birth outcomes, such as a decreased risk of perineal tearing. We recommend seeing a pelvic floor PT at least monthly during your pregnancy.
How soon after giving birth can I start PT?
Typically, your OBGYN will clear you for exercise and sexual intercourse around 6 weeks as long as there were no major complications. However, it is safe to begin pelvic floor PT 3-4 weeks postpartum to aid in healing of the muscles and ligaments as well as to avoid injury.
In addition, patients that had a birth involving an episiotomy, forceps, vacuum, tearing that required stitches, or a C-section are all at a higher risk for pelvic floor dysfunction.
How can pelvic floor PT help during my cancer journey?
While cancer treatments are life-saving, they can result in conditions that make survivorship challenging. Patients who have experienced bladder, cervical, uterine, or other abdominal organ cancer can experience pelvic floor dysfunction as a result of surgery or radiation. However, breast cancer patients have been found to have a higher rate of pelvic floor issues as well. At Sound Body, we specialize in cancer rehabilitation and pelvic floor dysfunction and are at the perfect intersection to treat your symptoms.
