Pregnancy / Postpartum Conditions

Helping you prepare for your upcoming birth through targeted exercises and soft tissue techniques, treating pre or postpartum diastasis recti, or helping you get back to your normal exercise routine.

Sexual Health

Whether it be pain during sex, decreased sensation, or pain with orgasm, these conditions can be difficult on relationships and are often not talked about enough with providers.

Constipation / Bloating / Incontinence

If you are suffering from IBS, Crohns, UC, or other GI conditions, often there are corresponding muscle imbalances or impaired coordination that when treated can improve symptoms and overall quality of life.

Pelvic girdle / Low back pain

Pelvic pain and low back pain can both be relieved through pelvic floor PT through therapeutic exercise, soft tissue techniques, and functional retraining.

Post Trauma

Regardless of where your trauma may come from, feeling disconnected from your body can make it challenging to heal. Pelvic floor PT can help you feel reconnected to yourself and regain control of your body.

What to Expect during your Session

It can be intimidating to make the leap to begin pelvic floor PT. You might be thinking about gynecological exams, and how uncomfortable they can be. To put your mind at ease, your treatment will not involve putting your feet in stirrups. Together, we will determine the type of assessment that is right for you.

Maybe you didn’t even know it existed until a friend or provider mentioned it to you! However, clinical research as well as patient testimonials back up its safety and effectiveness. As more light is shed on pelvic floor conditions that were previously taboo to discuss, more and more people are getting relief from their symptoms and getting back to their lives.

Your first visit will consist of a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that your treatment is tailored to your specific needs. We will discuss your symptoms and medical history, note how you move during normal activities, and review the muscles, nerves, or tissue that may be contributing to your symptoms. We will review your daily habits and activities to make sure your treatment plan is feasible for you.

At the end of your evaluation, we will discuss exercises to begin and applicable habit changes to start you on the path to feeling better. Whether your pelvic floor issues have started recently or have been ongoing for years, there are treatment options for relief. Below are some common treatment modalities you can expect during your sessions.

Strengthening Exercises

If pelvic floor weakness is the cause of your symptoms, we will review strengthening exercises, including Kegels, to improve the strength and endurance. Oftentimes, patients utilize surrounding muscles such as their inner thighs or glutes instead of their pelvic floor, which can make it difficult to control urinary symptoms.

Relaxation and Pain Relief

Many pelvic floor issues are a result of increased tension, which can result in pain and impaired overall functioning. Breathing exercises and stretches are imperative to help calm your central nervous system down to reduce tension and help you connect with your body. If you struggle with pain during sex, graded exposure through manual therapy or vaginal dilators are also tools for relief.

Coordination and Neuromuscular Reeducation

Sometimes, your muscles are strong, however they are not contracting at the correct time, whether due to pain or recovery from surgery/birth. This can result in leakage with sneezing, coughing, or exercising (think stress incontinence). Learning to coordinate your pelvic floor muscle contraction with core contraction and breathing can improve your symptoms and help you feel more in control.

Lifestyle and Habit Changes

Since the pelvic floor is so closely connected to your internal organs (think bladder and rectum), it is important to build good habits around bladder and bowel health. We will work together to determine any lifestyle changes or habit changes that can improve your symptoms.
